Sourdough Mountain

Diablo Lake Area

Miles: 11 miles roundtrip

Elevation: 5,000 feet gained

In the first two miles the trail switchbacks up about 3,000 feet! After that the trees start to thin out a bit and glimpses of the peaks above keep you climbing until, at about 4 miles, you cross Sourdough Creek. Then you reach beautiful meadows and one more set of switchbacks. After completing this last climb, you reach the lookout and its full range of views. The lookout was built in 1933.

  • Get there: From I-5 take Highway 20 east past Marblemount and turn left onto Diablo Road at Milepost 126 just before the bridge. After about 3/4 miles pass over a bridge and stay right, reaching the trailhead one mile from the highway. The parking is to the right and the trailhead is across, near the tennis courts.
