There is a split in the trail just after it starts, the other trail heads to Bear Lake, which is only a half mile away from this junction. After one and a half miles you enter an alpine terrain and might get fooled by a beautiful tarn. To find the much bigger lake, follow the stream uphill. This trail has a lot of roots and mud at times, but that always means a little more solitude.

  • Get there: Taking the Mountain Loop Highway past Verlot about four and half miles, turn right onto Schweitzer Creek Road, FS Road 4020. After about two miles turn onto Bear Lake Road, FS rd 4021. The trailhead is another three and a half miles.
